Guidelines

Code of Canon Law (Can. 868 §1.) For an infant to be baptized licitly:

1. The parents or at least one of them or the person who legitimately takes their place must consent;

2. There must be a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be delayed according to the prescripts of particular law after the parents have been advised about the reason.

Preparation

Baptisms of infants and young children (under age seven) are celebrated on the first full weekend of each month during the scheduled liturgies. Baptisms also may be scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on other Sundays of the month. Those who seek a baptism of their infant or young child must attend a baptismal workshop. Please call Julie Walton (317.846.3850) for details.

Unbaptized adults and children (age seven to seventeen) are prepared for the sacrament through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults or Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIA and RCIC). Information about RCIA and RCIC may be obtained by calling Vania Goodwin, RCIA Team Coordinator, at 317-915-1282 or sending her an e-mail (vgoodwin@seas-carmel.org).
